IDC: Digital Photo Frames to Sell 42 Million Units by 2011
Sept. 13, 2007 – The imaging industry is expected to sell 42.3 million digital photo frames worldwide by the year 2011, according to a new study released by market and research firm IDC. In what the analyst firm calls the "industry’s first market size and forecast for the worldwide digital photo frame market," the study showed more than half of those frames will be shipped to the U.S.The study, titled "Digital Frame 2007-2011 Forecast: Reigniting Softdisplay Imaging Solutions," studied the market in the U.S., Western Europe, and Asian Pacific regions, among other areas.
IDC Monitors and Projectors Senior Research Analyst Tom Mainelli attributed the continued growth of digital photo frame sales to low prices and product interest last year.
IDC found in 2006, most digital frames sold measured 5 to 6.9 inches. This year, however, IDC predicts digital frame size will grow to 7 to 8.9 inches, making up the bulk of the digital frame market. That frame size is expected to remain the top-selling size until 2011.
Between 2006 and 2011, IDC predicts the price of digital frames will drop by 16.5 percent.
'As the desire to view digital images on soft displays rather than hardcopies grows, digital frames will realize significant shipment increases in all regions around the world,' said IDC program director Ron Glaz of Digital Imaging Solutions and Services in a Sept. 11 press release.
'To be successful in the future, digital frames will need to seamlessly fit into the evolving digital home content ecosystem and support wireless access to personal digital content for display,' Glaz said.
