Digital Camera Review

The Hasselblad H3D 31 is a medium-format DSLR, with a 44.2 x 33.1 mm, 31-megapixel sensor. At $24,995, it's a general-purpose camera for high-end professional work. Hasselblad also sells a 39-megapixel H3D and a 22-megapixel iteration. The H3D 31 operates a little faster than the other models, and its sensor is physically a little smaller. Its ISO range runs from 100 to 800, a stop faster at both ends than the other H3Ds, so it may be more appropriate for work with moving subjects than the others.

Value
A camera is only worth $25,000 if one can make $100,000 with it. It's hard to say how many people can do that. The H3D 31 produces marvelous quality, securely at the level that used to require 4x5-inch film – we'll have to test the camera before we swear to that, but looking at its sample images, it doesn't feel risky to say. A decade ago, advertising photographers plowed through Velvia at amazing rates. Some of their clients have been convinced to take a quality hit for cost and convenience. Advertising is a competitive business, though, and buyers have to balance cost and quality. An ugly, low-cost ad is less cost-effective than a striking, expensive one. Apparently, Hasselblad has a product that delivers quality.  Hasselblad can't control how much demand there is for the quality in the marketplace for images. Given enough demand, the H3D 31 will offer value to a segment of commercial photographers.

Who’s this Camera For?
