First Impressions Review

The Hasselblad H3D 31 is a medium-format DSLR, with a 44.2 x 33.1 mm, 31-megapixel sensor. At $24,995, it's a general-purpose camera for high-end professional work. Hasselblad also sells a 39-megapixel H3D and a 22-megapixel iteration. The H3D 31 operates a little faster than the other models, and its sensor is physically a little smaller. Its ISO range runs from 100 to 800, a stop faster at both ends than the other H3Ds, so it may be more appropriate for work with moving subjects than the others.

Picture Quality / Size Options
The H3D 31 has no quality or size options. It shoots 31MP 3FR files, with pixel dimensions of 4872 x 6496. The 16-bit RAW files are typically about 40MB, with lossless compression. The save out as 95MB 8-bit TIFFs.

Picture Effects Mode
The H3D 31 doesn't have picture effects modes either, and Hasselblad marketing materials make a pretty cogent argument against modes for portraits, landscapes, product and so on. Simply put, they argue that enhancing color in one area will throw off accuracy elsewhere in the gamut. Backed up with examples from an unnamed competitor, Hasselblad show test images shot in various modes, with some colors looking swell and others looking like the dog's lunch. They claim the Hasselblad image gets all the colors spot-on. It would be interesting to repeat the test in a neutral setting.
