Google Charges for Extra Online Storage

PicasaAugust 13, 2007 – If nearly 3GB isn’t enough space, Google is now offering up to 250GB of online storage - for a fee. Straying from its typical free storage, Google will add subscription-based plans for extra space for Gmail and the online sharing site Picasa Web Albums. Plans start at $20 per year for 6GB of space.

"That will help make storage really useful, like letting you upload lots of full resolution images to Picasa Web Albums," said Software QA Engineer Lead Ryan Aquino, of Picasa Web Albums, in a Google Blog post last week.

Picasa

Google's Picasa is a photo management software that can detect photos stored on a hard drive and organize them automatically. With the additional space offering, Google may now compete with other online sharing sites such as Flickr and Sharpcast that also allow users to store high resolution photos.

Google plans to offer extended online storage with Google Docs & Spreadsheets soon, according to the company blog. Google users can purchase additional online storage at Google Accounts.
