Google Acquires Geo-photo Sharing Site

PanoramioJune 1, 2007 – Google recently announced it has partnered with a Spain-based photo-sharing website called Panoramio. Details about the deal have not been disclosed, but the integration is already in progress, according to the official Panoramio blog.

Panoramio is a free online photo-sharing site that, using Google Earth and Google Maps, allows users to map out up to 2GB of photos with virtual pushpins, marking their travels on a personal global map that can be viewed by other users. When a user types in a city location, the map displays photos submitted by the Panoramio community.

Under the acquisition, Google will incorporate Panoramio’s technology, content, developers, and user community into its own. Specifics have not been released, and Google has not stated whether the technology will be integrated into Picasa, Google's photo-sharing website.

“It's too early to say exactly how Panoramio' s technology will be integrated into Google, but our team will work to improve the experience of end users. For now, Google Earth users will continue to see Panoramio as a default layer in Google Earth,” states Google’s website.
