Fujifilm Announces Media for Laser-labeling DVD Drives

FujiFilmJune 14, 2007 – This week, Fujifilm announced the release of recordable media for its Labelflash laser-labeling DVD drives. The technology will be included on select models of Toshiba’s new Satellite Notebook computer series.

Labelflash DVD drives inscribe detailing into the surface of DVDs using a laser and specialized organic dye. This process eliminates the use of label printers or sticker labels. The recordable media will be introduced in DVD-R format.

In a press release, Fujifilm outlined the process involved in burning a Labelflash disc. Users with a compatible DVD drive and Fujifilm’s DVD-R disc will record data onto the disc, then flip it and re-insert it into the Labelflash drive with the label side facing down. The drive’s optical laser will then inscribe an image into the disc. The images are inscribed .6mm below the surface of the disc to prevent scratching and retain durability.

Labelflash will be available in most retail locations that carry Fujifilm products.
