2.6 The Fujifilm Z33WP is a waterproof (up to 10 feet depth ) compact camera  that takes only lackluster photos. But at $140, it won't break the bank if you lose it at the beach.

Sample Photos

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by three actual-size crops.

Candid Sample
x Focal length: 9.3mm
ISO: 200
Aperture: f/4.0
Shutter speed: 1/105 of a second

This candid shot of a local street performer was taken with the camera in full auto mode, with the camera going for a relatively low ISO and wide aperture. Despite the ISO level being at 200, you can still see a fairly significant amount of noise in the fine details of the image, and the highlights of the green boa on the cart are somewhat lost.

Architecture Sample
x Focal length: 6.3mm
ISO: 100
Aperture: f/3.7
Shutter speed: 1/420 of a second

For this shot of the Widener Library at Harvard on a chilly Boston day, the Z33WP chose a fast shutter speed and low ISO level. As a consequence, the noise is less noticeable, but you can see how soft the details at the edge of the frame can become in the details of the tree on the left (see the second crop below).

Macro Sample
x Focal length: 6.3mm
ISO: 100
Aperture: f/3.7
Shutter speed: 1/90 of a second

Taken with the focus in macro mode, this shot of a chilly Boston morning shows that the macro mode is a little limited. The minimum focus distance is about 8cm, so you can't get really close to your subject. And, once again, there is a distinct pattern of noise in the areas of plain color.

Low Light Sample
x Focal length: 10.4mm
ISO: 1600
Aperture: f/4.0
Shutter speed: 1/20 of a second

The Z33WP choked on our normal low light test setup: the camera was not able to focus. So, we gave it a little more light to works with for this shot; about 15 lux, which is equivalent to a dimply lit room. The camera was able to focus here, and the scene recognition mode chose the night mode. On our first attempt, it used the flash, which is a really bad thing to do at night; you will end up scaring off your subjects. For this shot, we turned the flash mode to forced off.
x x x As you can see, the result is somewhat grainy and unpleasant looking, with weak colors.
