Conclusion

The FinePix HS10 is a powerhouse camera in a number of ways, with an incredibly long lens and a number of new features, such as the enhanced low light mode, panorama shooting and high speed still and video shooting. These are because of the new back-side illuminated CMOS sensor that the HS10 uses, but it is not the only camera to offer this; a number of other cameras announced recently are using this sensor as well, such as the Samsung TL350.

What these cameras don't have is the incredible zoom range of the HS10, which is built around a 30x zoom lens that goes from a 24mm wide angle to a 720mm telephoto. And the performance of this lens is key to the performance of the camera, and we've often seen long lenses have problems because they have to pack so much into a small space. So, we'll have to reserve judgment until we can get this into our labs and run our suite of tests on it.

The downside of this big lens is that it's a big, bulky camera that needs two hands to hold and use. The question is if this bulk is worth the extra features it offers, and the sizable $500 cost of the camera. You'll be able to find out for yourself in April when it comes out, and keep an eye out for our full review.
