Digital Cameras Among Top Mother’s Day Gifts

May 12, 2006 - Forget the flowers and brunches, mom wants a digital camera for Mother’s Day. That’s according to a study released by the Consumer Electronics Association anyway. This Sunday, 32 percent of moms hope to receive a consumer electronics gift. Digital cameras ranked highest on the "most wanted" list.

"As we have seen for years, women are enthusiastic CE consumers," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA, in the May 4 press release. "Now they are starting to keep their fingers crossed that some of their favorite devices arrive for Mother’s Day in lieu of traditional gifts."

According to the survey, 55 percent of moms would rather have a digital camera than a $200 gift certificate for a home cleaning service. Not all those moms will be so lucky though; the study also found that flowers and perfume still top the list of potential Mother’s Day gifts.

The average Mother’s Day gift will cost $109 for adults and $63 for teens. About 81 percent of adults will purchase a gift, compared with 97 percent of teens.

"It should come as no surprise that the number of teens who plan to give CE products this Mother's Day is nearly double that of adults," said Sean Wargo, CEA’s director of industry analysis, in the release. "An overwhelming number of studies and reports have documented the growing fascination with electronics among the so-called ‘Generation Tech.’"
