Credit Card Numbers Breached at Nikon World Magazine

September 19, 2006 – Last week, Nikon World Magazine disclosed subscriber financial information through their online signup page, breaching home addresses, telephone numbers, and credit cards numbers of 3,235 subscribers, according to a Wall Street Journal article Tuesday.

Michael Nimmer, an Alabama resident, discovered the faulty system when attempting to sign up for the Nikon-sponsored magazine and reported it to Nikon. Over a nine-hour period on September 12th, nine subscribers had access to other subscribers’ personal information.

"That just can’t happen. With ID theft, with all the theft of personal data, you just can’t make mistakes like this," Nimmer told the Wall Street Journal.

Nikon notified its subscribers of the security breach via email. Nikon blamed the system failure to an external party. As compensation to its subscribers, Nikon offered a free one-year membership and a free ticket to the Nikon School of Photography, according to the Wall Street Journal.
