2.8 The Exilim EX-G1 is a slim camera that can shoot in tough conditions. However, we were not impressed with the image quality.

Sample Photos

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by three actual-size crops.

Landscape sample
x Focal length: 6.6mm (38mm equivalent)
ISO: 64
Aperture: f/3.9
Shutter speed: 1/60 of a second

In this shot of a rather cold and rainy Davies square shot in auto mode, the EX-G1 chose a low ISO and slow shutter speed. The resulting image shows some noise (see the crop of the theater billbiard), and the edges of the image are very soft. Look at the crop of the sign (from the left side) and the tree (from the top right) for examples.

Macro Sample
x Focal length: 6.6mm (38mm equivalent)
ISO: 125
Aperture: f/3.9
Shutter speed: 1/60 of a second

This shot shows how poor the macro mode of this camera is: this is the closest we could get to the snowflake while keeping it in focus. You can also see the poor depth of field of the camera, where the range that is in focus is very small. The snowflakes just in front and behind the one in focus are blurry.

Low Light Sample
x Focal length: 7.95mm (45mm equivalent)
ISO: 64
Aperture: f/4.1
Shutter speed: 4 seconds

This shot of our low light setup was taking in the cameras auto mode. This kept the ISO low, but pushed the shutter speed out to 4 seconds. As you can see, the resulting shot is somewhat noisy, but the result is quite acceptable, considering very small amount of light available (about 3 lux).

Oddly, we got the best results from our low light setup by using the auto mode, not the night scene mode.In the night scene mode, the camera was unable to focus properly, and the captured image was extremely noisy.

High Contrast Sample
x Focal length: 6.6mm (38mm equivalent)
ISO: 64
Aperture: f/3.9
Shutter speed: 1/60 of a second

This shot of winter tree branches against the sky again shows the problems that the EX-G1 has resolving fine details. Although the branches in the centre of the frame (the first crop) are sharp, the top left (second crop) and bottom right (third crop are much softer, with the branches turning into blurry messes.
