The Casio Exilim EX-FC100 is an utter speed demon of a camera, to the extent we’re tempted to put chrome rims and a spoiler on it. The ability to capture still photographs at 30 frames per second, and slow-motion video at up to 1000 fps, in a far more affordable package than the previous Casio high speed models, is a powerful drawing card.
However, there are major drawbacks to some of these speedy tools. Shooting 30 fps photography lowers the resolution from it’s usual nine megapixels down to six. The video at 1000 fps is so low-resolution (224×64) and artifacted as to be near useless, though it improves at slower speeds. Both high speed video and still photographs inherently require a large amount of light, and so are far better suited to sunny outdoors settings. This does make it ideal for shooting sports and wildlife, assuming the sun is shining.
The camera has other issues too. Its resolution performance was underwhelming, mostly due to low sharpness, and it doesn’t have very good color accuracy (on the plus side, image noise was quite low). The controls aren’t laid out well, given the size of the camera, and the menu system is frustrating. However, if you want the speed this camera can provide, at a relatively low price and slim form-factor, then you can probably look past those flaws.
