Introduction

Debuting at around $300, the EX-ZR100 is Casio’s latest flagship high-speed camera, capable of 1000FPS video recording (albeit heavily letterboxed), and up to 40 FPS still image shooting. The camera also sports a 12.5x optical zoom ratio, as well as a back-illuminated 12.1-megapixel CMOS image sensor and 1080/30p video recording. We found the camera heavily processed many of its images in its default setting, but the end result was still often fairly accurate images, with little to no noise across the 100-3200 ISO range. We found the images were a tad oversharpened in-camera, and Casio could seriously do with a menu re-design, but the ZR100 strikes us as a worthy leader for Casio’s 2011 high-speed lineup.

Color

We found that the ZR100 produced average color accuracy that was severely undermined by an inaccurate white balance system.

Noise

Noise was artificially very limited on the EX-ZR100, as Casio has elected to not be delicate in eliminating noise throughout the ISO range.

Resolution

The EX-ZR100 severely oversharpened most of its images in-camera, an effect resulting in fairly good scores but harmful to image quality on occasion.

Video

The Casio ZR100’s high-speed video modes are fun to play with, though any speed faster than 240fps results in a significant quality dropoff.

Hardware

The ZR100 has a fairly thin metal body that is lightweight but feels sturdy in the hand. The camera design provides easy grip for such a small camera.

Controls

The ZR100 provides mostly manual control for still shooting, with some override options and adjustments. This camera is built for speed, though, so there’s few creative modes on offer.

Design & Handling

The ZR100 doesn’t necessarily have the feel of the highest-end compact cameras, but it offers solid metal construction, a convenient button layout, and a nice grip in a lightweight, compact body.
