Canon Announces New Hybrid IS System

July 22, 2009 – Canon announces a new generation of stabilization technology, which will compensate for two types of movement: angle and shift. Angle shake (rotation) was dealt with by Canon's existing line of IS lenses, but the new system will also compensate for absolute directional movements (shift). This is the first line of SLR lenses to account for both types of shake, and should make its way into lenses before the end of 2009.

The Hybrid IS system has two sensors in the lens, one for each type of movement, as well as a new algorithm for calculating the correction needed from said sensors. Canon claims the addition of linear shift stabilization will be especially beneficial for macro photography, as close-up shooting is more likely to be negatively affected by the camera moving parallel to the subject.
