Canon Takes Face Recognition in Consumer Cameras A Step Further

November 7, 2005 - Other than the demonstration of Canon’s prototype hydrogen fuel cell in the concept digital camera model EOS Kiss N, one of Canon’s biggest surprises at the Canon Tokyo Expo 2005 was face recognition technology. Nikon currently sells cameras that feature Face Priority Autofocus on their point-and-shoots, but the technology Canon demonstrated detects not only faces, but also smiles, blinked eyes, and wayward children wandering out of the picture.

Canon has not definitely stated when such technology will be put into their production models.

Other featured products were a 55-inch SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter display), a printer with the highest resolution of 4800 dpi, and a printer than can make prints of 44 by 60 inches, and a see-through camera prototype with see-through circuitry, which Roland Tellzen of Australianit.news.com says has "the appearance of a glass cube."
