Canon Reports Light Leak with PowerShot A650 IS

Oct. 9, 2007 - Canon last week warned customers of a light leak problem with the Canon PowerShot A650 IS digital camera. The problem causes photos to appear distorted when shooting with the LCD open and direct sunlight shining on the back of the camera. Canon is offering to repair the damage for free for customers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Canon PowerShot A650 IS

Canon claims the only cameras affected are PowerShot A650 IS digital cameras with a zero for the fifth digit from the left in the serial number, announced Canon in an Oct. 3 press release. However, even if the serial numbers do match, Canon advises customers to check for a marking inside the battery cover of their PowerShot. If customers notice a marking it means the problem has already been corrected and the camera can be used as normal.

The light leak phenomenon occurs when users shoot with the variangle LCD screen that flips out from the body. Canon reports users with affected cameras can avoid the problem by keeping the variangle LCD monitor closed.
