Chromatic Aberration
Paired with the 18-135mm STM kit lens, the Canon T4i produced very little chromatic aberration in our lab testing. There is some red and green fringing at the edges of the frame, but it's kept pretty well under control. The middle focal lengths suffer far less from aberrations, as does the center of the frame.
Distortion
While sharper than the old 18-135mm kit lens, the new STM version still suffers from some monstrous distortions, particularly at the wide end of the zoom range. At the 18mm setting, the lens exhibits barrel distortion of 2.7%. It's quite noticeable in everyday shooting, leading to curved walls, poles, and horizons. The good news is that it's pretty simple barrel distortion and thus relatively simple to correct in post-processing. The distortion quickly flips over to moderate pincushion at longer focal lengths, topping out around 1.6% at middle zoom settings.
