The SX1 IS is a powerhouse of a camera, with a long zoom and a good range of features. The high definition video it captures looks very promising, and the camera handles well. But there are a few things about it that are less than optimal; the zoom starts at 28mm, which isn't wide enough to get in big groups. The playback controls are also a little awkward.
And there is the big issue with this camera: price. At a list price of $599, it costs just a little bit less than the XSi SLR, which may prove more tempting to many users. The SX1 comes with a better lens than the kit lens of the XSi, but you can't swap it out; you're stuck with that lens for better or worse.
For any user, $599 is a big chunk of change to lay out, and its also $100 more expensive than the just announced Sony DSC-HX1, which has the same zoom range and a broadly similar set of features. We'll reserve judgment on which is the best pick until we can get both into the lab to test out, but it looks like the SX1 will be a powerful, if expensive, camera.
