The Canon PowerShot SD970 IS does offers some significant upgrades over its predecessor, headlined by a larger and higher-resolution LCD and HD video recording at 720p, content along with an HDMI out port. Less important are the increase in megapixels from 10 to 12 and the upgrade to the now ubiquitous DIGIC 4 processor.
The camera feels good in your hand and we like its usability. We do wish Canon had taken this opportunity to add a larger maximum aperture and wider angle lens, but the SD970 IS looks like a capable little camera that will likely offer the right mix of features for many consumers. We're not sure they're going to be so happy about the list price of $380, however.
