Sample Photos

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by four actual-size crops.

Macro shot

Focal length: 4.9mm
Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter: 1/1600 second
ISO:125

This flower was shot with the camera in program mode, using the My Color: Vivid mode and in macro focus mode. You can see that the camera did a good job of capturing detail, but like most compact camera macro modes, there is little depth of field, so parts of the flower are out of focus. The colors look good, though; bright and vivid, but without becoming too blown our or oversaturated.

Low Light (Program)
Focal length: 11.41mm

Aperture: f/4.5
Shutter: 1/3 second
ISO:1600

Shooting in program mode with a single bulb in the room as a light source, the camera chose to up the ISO and reduce the shutter speed for this low-light shot. The result is very acceptable, with relatively low noise and a good amount of detail.

Low Light (High Sensitivity)

Focal length: 11.41mm
Aperture: f/4.5
Shutter: 1/20 second
ISO:6400

The high sensitivity mode of the SD4000 widens the ISO range, and the camera decided to up this to 6400. The price for this is reduced resolution; this mode shoots 2.5-megapixel images. The captured image looks good, though; the images have better color and a comparable level of detail than the one above, but at a much faster shutter speed. If you are shooting hand-held, this could make a considerable difference.

Landscape Sample
Focal length: 4.9mm

Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter: 1/200 second
ISO:125

Shot in the program mode, this photo of one of the locals shows how the AF system sometimes doesn’t make good choices. Although we set it to use the larges focus area possible, the system decided to focus on the distant objects and ignore the closest one. Otherwise, the image shows the good level of detail that the camera captures, although you can see some softness in the image in the corners (see the second crop, from the top right corner)
