Canon G11

Digital Camera Review

4.3 The Canon PowerShot G11 takes great photos and has lots of controls, making it essentially an SLR in point-and-shoot clothing.

Sample Photos

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by three actual-size crops.

Landscape Sample
x Focal length: 8.1mm
ISO: 160
Aperture: f/4.0
Shutter speed: 1/400 of a second

This shot was taken in the program mode of the G11, using the Vivid color mode. As you can see, this captured and  boosted the autumn colors of the yellow maple tree. As you can also see from the crops below, the details of the leaves are sharp at the center, but a little soft at the edges. The highlights of the gravestone are also a little blasted out, with little detail being captured on the highlights.

Macro Sample
x Focal length: 6.1mm
ISO: 1600
Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter speed: 1/4 of a second

Our long-legged model isn't a big fan of having her photo taken, so she likes to hide in dark spots when we whip a camera out. This meant that for this macro shot, we had to use a shutter speed of 1/4 of a second and a very open aperture, even with the ISO boosted to 1600. The G11 did a very decent job of capturing the image, though; there is a fair amount of noise, but the details are still very visible.

Low Light example
x Focal length: 6.1mm
ISO: 6400
Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter speed: 1/15 of a second

This shot of a speeding train was taken in the G11's Low Light mode, which reduces the resolution and ups the ISO speed range. The advantage of this is that it can use a shorter shutter speed: 1/15 of a second allows the camera to almost freeze the speeding train. The downside is that there is quite a lot of noise in the image.
