Sample Photos

In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by three actual-size crops.

Macro Sample
x Focal length: 6.2mm
ISO: 80
Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter speed: 1/250 of a second

For this macro shot taken in full auto mode, the D10 put the emphasis on increasing the shutter speed. We would have preferred that it instead focused on aperture, as the depth of field is very small and the icicle is a little blurry at the edges. But because this camera has no manual or aperture priority mode, there is no way to specify this.

Where it is in focus, this shot is very sharp, though; the bubbles within the icicle are clearly visible.

Candid samples
x Focal length: 11.61mm
ISO: 125
Aperture: f/4.0
Shutter speed: 1/105 of a second

This candid shot of a local street performer was taken with the camera in program mode, with the camera picking a good balance of shutter speed, ISO and aperture to capture a sharp shot.

Landscape Sample
x Focal length: 2.8mm
ISO: 80
Aperture: f/2.8
Shutter speed: 1/400 of a second

This shot of a chilly Boston morning was taken in the landscape scene mode of the D10, which sets the focus to infinity and seems to boost the color saturation. The things to note here are that the image is sharp in the center (see the first crop below), but gets rather soft at the edge (see the last one, taken from the top edge of the photo frame).

The blue sky is also a little washed out, although this is understandable as the sun was just out of the frame to the left. The camera also chose a fast shutter speed for this photo, which was good as it was rather chilly and I wasn't wearing a coat.

Very Low Light Sample (auto mode)
x Focal length: 11.61mm
ISO: Auto (1600)
Aperture: f/4
Shutter speed: 1 second

This low light shot was taken with the camera in Program mode (with flash disabled), with a light level of about 3 lux (about what you would get with a single candle at a distance of a meter or two). It's a tough test for the camera, but the D10 does a decent job, dropping the shutter speed down to 1 second and upping the ISO to the maximum of 1600. The image is still rather unexposed, though, and it would be very blurry if the camera was not on a tripod.
x x x We were also forced to use manual focus as well, because the auto focus couldn't pick up enough contrast to work.
Very Low Light Sample (ISO3200 mode)
x Focal length: 11.61mm
ISO: 3200
Aperture: f/4
Shutter speed: 1/8 second

This shot was taken in identical conditions to the one above, but with the camera in the ISO3200 scene mode. This increases the ISO level of the camera to a maximum of 3200, and the camera takes full advantage of this, slowing shutter speed down to 1/8 of a second. However, this mode also reduces the resolution of the camera to a maximum of 1600 by 1200 pixels.
