September 1, 2006 – Marking August’s one-year anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Canon4Kids yesterday announced that it will donate digital imaging equipment to the New Orleans Police Department Juvenile Division in efforts to locate missing children in the Gulf Coast region.
Since the hurricanes, 5,192 missing or displaced children have been reported to the NCMEC Katrina Missing Persons Hotline, according to yesterday’s Canon press release.
As part of a joint venture between Canon USA Inc. and the National Center for Mission & Exploited Children since 1997, Canon4Kids donated a digital camera, scanner, camcorder, printer and copier to the New Orleans Police Department at an International Homicide Investigators Association’s Annual Training Symposium yesterday.
“Through our partnership with NCMEC, we hope to let everyone know that digital photographs can play a key role in helping law enforcement locate missing or displaced children," said Canon CEO and President Joe Adachi in the release. "The ability to help law enforcement, such as the New Orleans Police Department, reunite children with their families using our technology is very gratifying for our entire company," he said.
Canon has donated more than 600 units of digital equipment to law enforcement around the world.
