Introduction
The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV ($4999 MSRP, body only) is a professional-level DSLR, if the price itself didn't clue you in. It offers just a few step-ups from the three-year old 1D Mark III, but they may be enough to sway the right shooter: 16 MP pictures, a faster computer inside for better auto focus, higher ISOs, and video recording.
Design & Appearance
The Canon EOS-1D Mark IV is a big boy camera, no doubt about that. The fat grips on the side and bottom, the hefty weight, and the magnesium alloy body let you know immediately that this is designed for pros. Consumers looking to step up from their first DSLR may find this tough to get used to, but the excellent handling and customization possibilities make it worth investigating.
The camera, like its predecessors, was designed to for shooting either horizontally or at a 90-degree angle, and offers a dedicated shutter button and dial for the latter. All the ports are sealed up tight, promising some kind of weatherproofing, though you hate to see that kind of thing put to the test without any guarantees. Overall, it feels like a very study camera.
