Camera Bits Releases Photo Mechanic Upgrade
August 15, 2007 - Camera Bits last week released an upgrade to Photo Mechanic. Version 4.5.2, available for both Mac and Windows, comes with a number of tweaks and additions to version 4.5, released last March. The update corrects several bugs and adds support for recently released DSLRS. Photo Mechanic is a browser software program used to sort, edit, and catalog digital images. Photos are presented in a way similar to that of a contact sheet, geared toward professional photographers.
In addition to improved RAW support, Photo Mechanic 4.5.2 will now support a number of newer high-end DSLRs including the following:
- Canon EOS-1D Mark III
- Fujifilm S5 Pro
- Nikon D40X
- Leica M8, D-LUX 2 , D-LUX 3
- Olympus E-410 and E-510
- Olympus E-1, E-300, E-330
- Panasonic DMC-LX1 and DMC-LX2
The upgrade fixes a number of problems with the program, specifically two crashing issues seen on the Mac platform when users closed Preview or the contact sheet window, according to the company website. The program also adds a template so users can upload their images onto the Digital Railroad photo service.
In addition, improvements have been made regarding IPTC/XMP metadata. Now the IPTC/ XMP will log the user’s preferences for editing. Unlike version 4.5, the new IPTC/ XMP fields will be stored when cleared. The upgrade will now incorporate new variables into the metadata. The program’s variables – {lenstype} and {It} will to identify different types of lenses for Nikon and Canon DSLRs. Other variables -{aspect}, (or {aspt}) ,{aspectcrop}, and (or {aspc}) - can be used to determine the photo’s aspect ratio for cropping.
