Archival Process Takes Images from Digital to Film

September 20, 2005 – A German photo lab is offering a new service that goes in an unexpected direction: from a digital file to film.

The Minox laboratory in Seigen, Germany is offering a service that transfers digital photographs to 35mm film negatives. The company claims that the new service will help to avoid a "digital dark age", where digital images may be rendered unreadable due to either the loss of the equipment that reads them or the degradation of the media they are stored on. But images held on film will be readable for hundreds of years, so the company is offering the service as a way to protect valuable images for future generations.

The new service uses a CCG film recorder, which copies digital images to film at a resolution of 11 megapixels. The company claims that "Only stone sculptures are more durable" (our translation from the German).
