August 7, 2007 – Apple today unveiled iPhoto '08, the latest version of its Mac photo browser and editing software. As part of the full iLife ’08 product line, the updated photo management program is geared for automatic image organization and editing, according to the company website. iPhoto ’08 includes new editing tools and printing templates, an online photo gallery for sharing pictures, and the ability to search for photos by event.

“How do you find that one special photo when your library has thousands of photos? In iPhoto ’08, the answer is: with ease. You have a number of ways of search your library and they’re all in one place. Search by name, keyword, rating, or date and see your results in an instant – neatly organized by Event,” states the Apple website.

iPhoto ’08's new search function called “Event” automatically organizes photos by event instead of dates. Users can identify Events by assigning a name and poster photo that can be changed by the user. Users can then drag their mouse across the Event to quickly skim through photos in that album. Users can rate their photos by assigning them a star rating.

iPhoto '08 also allows users to share their photos online, a feature that was previously missing. With the launch of .Mac Web Gallery, both Mac and PC users can view the photos online, allowing viewers to download high resolution images.

iPhoto ’08 mixes tools from previous editions with new editing tools. Like previous iPhoto versions, users can adjust the size of the thumbnails or view them as single full-size images. The system now uses an updated crop tool that uses automatic grid lines to help photographers with the rule of thirds. The program allows users to save combinations of edit adjustments and apply them to other photos. Other features include a noise reduction tool for photos shot in low light and Shadow and Highlight controls that can isolate and fill in light on a face without affecting the rest of the photo.

For post-editing, iPhoto includes new templates for prints, books, calendars, and cards so that users can directly send their photos to print.

A single iPhoto user can download the upgrade for $79 with the iLife ’08 package. The upgrade to the family pack retails at $99. For more information, visit the Apple website
