Thumbs up Nikon d40 vs Canon 10d or other? 500 budget. and starter lense idea.

Other comments:
If you just respond as to your personal prefence between canon 10d and nikon d40 that would be a huge help, and a $250 price range all around decent use lense, there are too many lenses available and picking one is drivin me crazy, its like a needl in a hay stack. also if you have another suggestion thank the canon or nikon that is good bang for the buck I would appreciate it.

thanks

What level of photographer are you? (beginner, novice, expert, pro)
Novice...

How "deep" into settings do you want to be? ("just point-and-shoot", I want full control over aperature and gain, I don't know much yet and will probably be mostly automatic, but I want a camera that I can grow into.)
I want a camera that i can grow into.....

What is your primary subject. (Wildlife, landscapes, portrait, sports, underwater, astronomy etc..)
Portrait landscapes, wildlife. I would like to start out with one lense, prob in the $250 price range sinc i'm hopeing to find the camera body around $250. lense suggestions?

What is your secondary use or subject.
Wildlife

Will you be shooting mostly in low light?
50/50

What is your budget?
$500-600 for lense and camera, used I will but from ebay/craislist most likely

What cameras are you considering now and what attracted you to them?
canon 10d-- price and quality of build and Ido not plan on blowing thins up toobig, so assume i can save money by taking less megapixels.

nikon d40-- Not sure of diff from canon, i have heard its a faster camera?

Rank what features are most important to you? (Image quality, low light, fast shutter speed, wide angle, zoom, low noise, flash system, image stabilization, movie modes, ease of use. etc.

1. fast shutter speed
2. zoom
3. image stabilization
4. ease of use

What type of camera would you prefer and why? (SLR, Point and Shoot, TeleZoom)

SLR, want to takepics at the slr level, I want to finetune beyond my canon sd750

Do you have size preference? (Very small, small/slim, does not matter)
does not matter

Do you have lenses or accessories that are brand specific that you want to use? no

Well I checked craigslist today and low and behold::: I'm feeling really great about this purchase it came with 2 books also. I know not many people reply to these threads since us novices are pretty goofy, but I could still use help on a lense , I would like some more zoom with autofocus in the $200 range, any ideas???
