one hurdle overcome, now another

I was finally able to format the SD memory card in my Easy Share Z700 camera. However, if the camera is set to read from the card, the software will not recognize that the camera is connected to the computer via the USB cable so I can't transfer photos to the hard drive. If I change the camera to read "Intrenal Memory", I am able to transfer the photos. Is this normal? Also why won't the software read the camera when it set ti read form the memory card?
