Default Spare compactflash? Dead iPod Mini?

You're in luck. Crack open the iPod Mini, remove the microdrive and the CF card will fit right in. Change the battery while you're at it for an OEM one of higher capacity, attach the iPod to your computer and run 'iPod Updater' (downloadable from Apple.com) and, hey presto, you've got an iPod Mini, with longer battery life and no moving parts - which ought to last you until the time such things come in cornflakes packets. If you stick an 8gb card in, you'll have something that rivals the best iPod Nano!

I did this last night and now feel like a triumphant nerd.
