Default New Camera and looking for a memory card for it

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the board and I'm new to SLR cameras so please be easy on the old guy. I just got the Canon Rebel XTI camera. My question is, I'm looking for a memory card for it. If I go with a new 8GB SanDisk Extreme III memory card, does the larger the card is slow down the camera at all?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I just have not learned enough about the cameras yet.

Welcome to DCI!

Unless Canon's software engineers are complete muppets (probably not), the larger card shouldn't slow things down at all. The nice part about Flash is that it's pretty constant and predictable - for a given device, it doesn't take longer to access any particular area of it than any other area.

If you're picking up a retail packaged 8GB Extreme III this month (May 2007 for all you readers in the past/future), there's a $60 rebate available from Sandisk. You can download the form here:

Oh, and I hope you're not planning on walking into Ritz Camera or going to their website to pick one of those up - they'll take you to the cleaners. ($400 in this day and age? What a laugh).

B&H has that card for $150 before rebate, which seems to be a reasonably fair price on the web for that particular card (a little overpriced for CompactFlash of that size, but it's a brand that a lot of people know and trust, and the rebate makes things a lot more reasonable).

What do you think of your XTi? I'm currently looking at dSLRs myself, and I'm torn between that, Nikon's D40X (with reservations about compatible lenses) and Pentax's K10D (which costs a good bit more).

K10D all the way Smeghead! Or, indeed, any camera that allows you to meter with old, manual focus lenses. With a brace of made-for-digital lenses myself, I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that the older lenses offer portability, fast apertures and that subjective "character" for next to no money at all...

Here's a pic from my newly discovered Nikkor 105mm f2.5 (£65), newly discovered because I recently got round to buying a lens hood for it and cured it of its softness in daylight....

I have not been able to try out the camera yet. I need that card first. I think the camera will be good for what I need it for.

It seems like a lot of people are talking about this B&H. They do seem to have some good pricing. I ordered it from these guys. I hope the customer service is as good as B&H. http://www.adorama.com/IDSCF8GE3.ht...Flash&item_no=1

Thanks for the info!
