Default What did you photograph this fortnight? (20/11-4/12)

Well, I hope everyone here's had a busy week - I've been up to my ears with one thing or another, not least a whole bunch of post-processing... This week, I went to a graduation ceremony and, while I was very pleased to see an elderly friend of my get his certificate, I found myself being really bored by the speeches. And so I started taking photographs that might make me laugh. Suddenly, I realise why photojournalists always take those peculiar shots of reflections in podiums, key speakers obscuring parts of banners to make rude words, etc. - when covering political conferences: there's nothing else to do!

So, one picture is my take on that genre... Then there are two of local musicians in dark venues, both taken with a cheap, vintage Nikkor 105mm f2.5 lens; then, finally, there's one of my kitten because she's not been up for a while.

I've got potential good news about the kitten, involving a picture of her and a photography magazine... but nothing's set in stone yet. Watch this space though.

Nice photos, the kitten shot's excellent, I've got my fingers crossed for you... and your musician series just keeps getting better. There's loads of life in those old lenses!

I got into a new grundgy technique - shooting through the viewfinder of a Kodak Brownie Starflex ("dual lens reflex") with my Fuji F10. Here's a sampling:

Grundgy - I like it - all the imperfections of vintage, all the convenience of digital :-) Certainly a lot of mileage in this idea I reckon... how do you go about it? Did you physically stick your F10 onto the Brownie or just hold it in place?

The F10 has to be at least 6" from the top glass viewfinder - the Starflex uses 127 film and the viewfinder's fairly large. Anything closer and you start to see the mirror/lens instead of the image through them.

I built a turret out of an old box for 5x7 paper - stick that on the top of the Starflex and then the F10 on top of that. Cuts down on spurious light and reflection on the 'ground' glass vf.

I paid $4.50 for the Starflex, after seeing a friends camera. I understand these aren't in plentiful supply over in the UK, but I'm sure there are equivalent Agfa's etc.

Great shots, Nesster. I'm sure you couldn't quite capture the feel of those through photoshopping more normally-acquired images.

Anyway, nothing groundbreaking this past couple of weeks in terms of technique from me. The subject may seem samey to some, but I can't resist it. She learned to start smiling for the first time a couple of weeks back, and we've been getting gummy grins from her on a daily basis since then.

Other than big smiles, I caught a few cute shots of Kamali'o recently.

The first shows her fascination for the bears on the mobile of her playpen in the living room. She's always found them entrancing, and we have no clue why. My wife put her in there earlier last week to go do a couple of things in the kitchen. When my wife came out, she found her lying dead still looking right up at them, and when she spoke to Kamali'o, our little one startled and burst into tears. She apparently hadn't even noticed that Mum had come over to say hi.

I like how the sunlight streaming in the window catches the bears in the foreground.

The second is our daughter in another one of her favourite pastimes. I've always love how little babies feel comfortable when they're just about folded in half.

The last is her new floor gym thingy for tummy time and so forth. It's a little tropical island with a couple of palm trees and a few toys. I think the monkey she's staring at is shaping up to be the new bear for her. I love the way her eyes are bigger than her mouth in this one.

Anyway, enough boring you lot with baby photos.

Very cute baby! Just imagine what you could do with a cute baby like that and a Canon dSLR... Until that time comes to pass, have you played around with sticking (several layers of) Scotch tape (that's semi-opaque, frosty, easily removable sticky tape) over the flash on your Panasonic camera? It's not so good at long range (for obvious reasons) but for close quarters, it acts as a diffuser, creating a softer and more even light... You can do the same with a bit of ordinary paper, or tissue paper but these you'd have to hold in place...

Also, if you've not got one, consider getting a collapsable white disk reflector. You just hold them and reflect available light wherever you want it. They're invaluable for lifting shadow areas inside cribs and, also, have the bonus of being magically interesting to cats and babies..

This week I'm on a lighting kick.

Oh WHAT A BABY! I'm nostalgic now, that is such a great time when they start responding and following things... oh my... good pics too!

Over at another forum (I forget where) there's some advice re. cutting one of those white translucent film canisters (I think Fuji uses them) to open up the closed end, and then a slice off the side - making a C shape which you then slip on to your pop-up flash. Seems like that's worth a try, certainly cheap enough...

Hi all

I've been setting up my web page on Flickr so haven't taken a photo in weeks. I have however found some old pics taken with the web cam that are quite interesting. Funny how sometimes the cheap and crappy technology can give such interesting results.

Come visit me and tell me what you think. http://www.flickr.com/photos/katheric06/

As for the babies they are gorgeous. I too find them completely fascinating even though I have to settle for taking pictures of everyone elses. Unfortunately I haven't yet found a parent who is comfortable with me publishing baby or child shots to the web. Kinda sad really, but then again, I do understand.

One day, I'll have to get one of those flickr accounts. Nice webcam shots! My favourite, though, is the one Nesster commented on:

Fantastic composition.
