Category 2 is by fat the least interesting. 1 and 3 have some great stuff in 'em.
Back to Pup's post, laser sintering (as demonstrated in the second-place entry) can produce some absolutely mind-boggling stuff. Solid forms that probably couldn't be created any other way can be generated with relative ease. For example:
