Default Device to disable digital cameras

This is a bit alarming...

http://www.livescience.com/technolo...amera_tech.html

Quote:
Researchers have built a prototype device that disables digital cameras. Future versions might thwart unwanted photo-taking at a specific location and even prevent clandestine videos from being made.

The technology might one day prevent espionage in a building or stop pirating of movies from theaters.
...

The device uses sensors, lighting equipment, a projector and a computer to scan for, find and neutralize digital cameras. It looks for the reflectivity and shape of the image-producing sensors used in digital cameras. Future versions might operate in the invisible infrared range so the neutralizing technology would work unnoticed.

And if you moved the camera about, would the "blinder" track it? How fast does it scan an area looking for the reflection from a CCD?

I don't know where the fine line between "disabling" and "damaging" the image pickup sensor is... if the Disabler shines a bright beam into your camera (eg. from a laser diode), I'd think your sensor could be damaged by that - same as if pointing into the sun.

What they're not telling ya is that the next version will be mounted on a Talon for greater mobility, and will disable offending devices not with light, but with an M249 SAW.

Brought to you by your friendly local paramilitary division of the MPAA/RIAA...
