Pentax's risky K-01 is like no other mirrorless camera

Pentax has made a brave move with their latest mirrorless system camera: they’ve ignored all prevailing trends in the space, and announced a new model that strongly favors form over function (gasp!).

Why? Turns out there’s a bit of star-power behind the new K-01. The company recruited Marc Newson, one of the most influential contemporary designers on Earth, to lend his expertise to this camera. The body is large, boxy, bright, and very much reminiscent of Newson’s other work, which includes furniture, bicyles, cars, aircrafts, and yachts.

Not everyone will be on board for this highly divergent design, but for the photography buffs, may we politely direct you to the very impressive 40mm pancake lens, with its f/2.8 aperture and unbelievably thin form factor. The K-01 will also boast an APS-C sized CMOS sensor, 1080p video in H.264 encoding, 6 FPS burst mode, and an ISO range that tops out at 25600.

The Pentax K-01 (that’s kay-zero-one) will be available this March in yellow, black, or white. MSRP will be $899.95 for the kit, $749.95 body only.

The contemporary, timeless K-01 houses a full array of advanced functions and user-friendly features in a camera body with remarkable form and function. The elimination of an optical viewfinder and quick-return mirror gave Newson more freedom in designing the camera body, and the K-01 showcases Newson originality in every detail. Available in black, white and Newson’s signature yellow colors, the K-01 features the designer’s autograph logo stamp on the bottom of each camera.

The famed designer’s touch also is evident in a new smc PENTAX-DA 40mm F2.8 XS interchangeable lens. As the world’s thinnest interchangeable lens, the new 40mm combines with the PENTAX K-01 camera body to deliver a unique ILC system that is perfect for photographers who are as keen on design as they are on performance. Together, the K-01 and 40mm lens system mark the intersection where high technology and high design meet.
