Canon reveals the flagship PowerShot G1 X

Canon has announced their new top of the line PowerShot model, the G1 X, which replaces the respected PowerShot G12. This compact camera will feature an astonishingly large 1.5-inch (18.7 × 14mm) CMOS sensor capable of 14.3 megapixel resolution. This huge sensor is actually bigger than a standard four-thirds, and by far the largest ever featured in a PowerShot.

The Canon PowerShot G1 X

Canon’s DIGIC 5 image processor will be integrated into the G1 X, and the company claims this will allow the camera to achieve better high-speed burst performance, even in challenging lighting scenarios. A smarter multi-area white balance will also be availalbe, which Canon hopes will ensure more accurate color reproduction.

Optical zoom will be reduced from the G12, down to 4x, however maximum ISO sensitivity has been increased to 12800. Aperture range has also been upgraded, and now extends from f/2.8 to f/16. Video shooting at 1080p will be possible, while the G12 was limited to 720p. And the flip-out, swiveling LCD will receive the final upgrade mentioned today, screen size will be stretched out to 3 inches, and resolution will be boosted to 922,000 dots.

Like the G12 before it, the G1 X will carry over features like RAW+JPEG simultaneous shooting, a hardware model dial, and a front rotating dial. It will also be compatible with Canon flash accessories like Speedlite, Macro Twin Lite, or Macro Ring Light.

The PowerShot G1 X will be available in February for $799.99.
