 Olympus E-P1$800in SLR Cameras  The Olympus E-P1 is a kick-ass modern camera in retro-design disguise, with a compact size that finally delivers on the "micro" part of the Micro Four Thirds promise. Canon EOS 5D Mark II$2680in SLR Cameras  The full-frame, 21.1-megapixel Canon 5D Mark II aced our color accuracy and dynamic range tests, and captures 1080p movies with extraordinary quality. But it's not the perfect all-in-one still and video camera: there are still too many quirks. Nikon D5000$719in SLR Cameras  The Nikon D5000 is one of a handful of sub-$1000 video SLRs. Overall we found the Canon XSi did a better job shooting video, with higher definition and smoother video motion, but the Nikon was superior for still photography. Canon EOS Rebel T1i$795in SLR Cameras  The Canon Rebel T1i is one of the first video-enabled SLRs on the market. It can shoot 15-megapixel images and record HD video at 20 frames per second. In our lab testing, it had good color accuracy but poor sharpness. Panasonic DMC-GF1$900in SLR Cameras  Panasonic takes the compact Micro Four Thirds format to the next level with the GF1, delivering sharp, good-looking photos from a camera that focuses quickly, accepts an optional electronic viewfinder and, best of all, fits in your jacket pocket. Nikon D3x$7300in SLR Cameras  The Nikon D3x is a full-frame, 24.5-megapixel camera has a list price of $7999.95 without lens. Designed for studio use, the D3x performed very well in our lab tests, but in general scored slightly lower than the D700.
Panasonic DMC-GH1$1500in SLR Cameras  The Lumix GH1 is the first micro four-thirds camera to offer the extensive camcorder-style controls and continuous auto focus that video-enabled SLRs to date have lacked. Sony Alpha A900$2399in SLR Cameras  The Sony A900 is the company’s powerful attempt to compete with the big boys with a full-frame $2999, 24.6-megapixel resolution SLR. There are some features notably absent, though, and our lab testing turned up problems with color accuracy and image noise. Pentax K2000$491in SLR Cameras  The Pentax K2000 delivers a lot of photographic power at a low $599.99 price including lens and external flash. It's a fine choice for those stepping up from point-and-shoot cameras to their first SLR, but there's also surprising customizability for aspiring photographers. Olympus E-30$899in SLR Cameras  The Olympus E-30 is a new 12-megapixel, mid-range SLR that introduces Art filters to modify your photographs in interesting ways. While we were impressed by the sharpness and good image stabilization of this $1200 camera, it did poorly in our lab tests.  Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1$400in Cameras  The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 is a powerful ultrazoom camera that shoots decent pictures and good looking video, as well as being able to easily take night shots and panoramas. At around $500, It is expensive, but it does offer a lot of features. Canon SX1 IS$527in Cameras  It looks like an innocent compact SLR, but the Canon SX1 IS is actually a paparazzi-pleasing ultrazoom in sheep's clothing, with a 20x zoom plus high-def 1080p video. For the same $600, though, you could buy a highly rated interchangeable-lens SLR. Panasonic DMC-ZS3$318in Cameras  The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 packs a lot of features into its small case: 10-megapixel resolution, a 12x zoom and high definition video. And we found that it has the performance to match, with sharp, colorful images and video. Samsung HZ15W$280in Cameras  The Samsung HZ15W packs a 10x zoom into a very compact camera, complete with impressive image quality, 720p video and plenty of manual control. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900$325in Cameras  The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900, priced at $379.99 captures 12-megapixel images and HD video. However, photos tended to be noisy, and the small lens produced major distortion and chromatic aberration problems. Canon PowerShot SD970 IS$308in Cameras  COMPARED TO: Canon PowerShot SD1200 IS Canon PowerShot A2100 IS Canon PowerShot SD960 IS Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900 The Canon PowerShot SD970 IS is a capable 12.1-megapixel point and shoot with a 5x zoom. We found image quality was consistently very good, and movies shot at 720p were impressive. Kodak EasyShare Z950$240in Cameras  The EasyShare Z950 is a high-end point and shoot that captures 12 megapixel images and has a long 10x zoom. But we found that it had only lackluster performance, with slightly soft images and fuzzy video. Canon PowerShot S90$320in Cameras  The Canon PowerShot S90 is a high-end point & shoot camera that takes great photos and provides great manual controls for serious shooters. The video it captures is not particularly impressive, though. Nikon Coolpix P90$350in Cameras  While a competent camera, the Nikon Coolpix P90 doesn't distinguish itself from the ultrazoom competition, and has a disappointing video mode. Though the 24x lens is impressive, other cameras have better features and performance.
Canon SX120 IS$230in Cameras  The Canon PowerShot SX120 offers a lot for the $220 it costs: a decent 10x zoom lens, good video capture and full manual controls. |
